Seasoned vs. Kiln-Dried Hickory Firewood

Hickory firewood can be renowned for its hardiness and smoky flavor, but it's essential to pay attention when purchasing "seasoned" logs.
Leaving hickory firewood logs outside to air-dry for 12+ months (the process of seasoning) does not prevent some rot from setting in - resulting in mold growth, fungi colonies or even pest infestations.
Axe & Kindle, on the other hand, kiln-dries all of its hickory firewood. This means we remove moisture by using a super-sized kiln and fan to heat and dry the logs all at once.
The controlled environment within the kiln makes it possible to get the wood below 20% moisture every time.
While seasoned hickory wood can take multiple years to get down to an ideal moisture level, Axe & Kindle readies perfectly kiln-dried hickory firewood for you in a matter of days. Your fire will light easier and burn longer, brighter and with less smoke than a fire using seasoned wood.

Characteristics of Hickory Firewood

Appearance: Hickory wood is heavy, dense and straight-grained with a medium-brown, reddish hue highlighted with yellow or gold. The rough bark on hickory trees give it a shaggy appearance.
Ignition: Easy to light. Produces fires that are hot and long-lasting.
Burn & Heat: Burns clean, hot flame. Exceptional heat output. On average, hickory firewood burns at 28.5 million BTUs per stack. Outperforms nearly all other types of firewood.
Brightness: Produces a bright, captivating flame that is sure to illuminate any room with warmth and elegance.
Aroma: Savory, sweet, classic and bold without being too overbearing. Preferred firewood for cooking and flavoring meats. Fun fact: liquid smoke flavoring is actually modeled from the scent of hickory firewood.
Emissions: Low amount of emissions. No worries about it giving off any harmful emissions that could cause sickness.
Smoke: Low smoke output, because it’s kiln-dried to contain very low (under 20%) moisture.
Coals: Long-lasting, which will extend the burn and heat. Great “overnighter” fuel. Coals capable of burning hot through the night.
Insects: No insects because our hickory firewood is kiln-dried.
Mold: No mold growth because our hickory firewood is kiln-dried.

Varieties of Hickory Species

Hickory is a heavy, straight-grained dense hardwood type making it an excellent choice for firewood.
There are about 18 types of hickory wood, including some of these more popular hickory tree varieties:
  • Mockernut
  • Shellbark
  • Bitternut
  • Pignut
  • Shagbark
Shagbark hickory is the best choice when it comes to heating your home - more BTU per stack than any other variation. It’s also the most commonly found and available hickory tree type.
Hickory trees are a great source of warmth and light, thanks to the superior firewood they provide.
